No Man’s Sky gets better and better because it keeps adding new things to do all the time. The latest update, Aquarius, brings a whole new set of intergalactic challenges to the universe with the introduction of around 160 fish to catch and along
Yes, today we are going fishing in trouterspace (I’m really sorry).
Hot on the heels of the World’s update which revamped the way water and clouds were handled comes Aquarius which brings a new (fishing) Expedition as well as a new blueprint, the Fishing Rig, to the game. First, we need the Blueprint, then we need to make the Fishing Rig, and then we need to find water before finally casting our rod for the first time. And here is how you do all that.
Fishing in NMS
Okay so we all got the memo that fishing in No Man’s Sky’s vast universe is now a thing, but you cannot simply fly off to the nearest watery planet and get going. Fishing in NMS requires some new equipment, and while it is cheap and easy to craft, it still involves a trip to The Anomaly to pick up the Blueprint.
1 – Fly to The Anomaly
If you play NMS you will probably know what The Anomaly is. If you have just started or not progressed the main story enough, you need to do that until you unlock it. Once you have visited The Anomaly for the first time you can summon it at any point when you are in space. So that is job one. Get in your ship, head away from your planet and when you are far enough away, bring up your Quick Menu (X on PC) and select Summon Anomaly. Once it has appeared off in the distance fly to it and directly into its entrance hatch and the game will take over and land you automatically.
The Anomaly is a sort of central game hub where you are most likely to see and be able to interact with real home players, but we aren’t going to do that. We are looking for an NPC, or Iteration as they are known called Eos.
2 – Find Iteration Eos
Iteration Eos can be located in the research area of The Anomaly.
Once you are out of your ship in the Anomaly station head upstairs. If you know your way around you are looking for where Polo and Nada hang out. They are the two creatures who stand opposite each other upstairs and have a major part to play in the main story. Run past them into the rooms beyond until you find the room where you can buy new Blueprints for everything. All research hubs are here hosted by various Iterations.
We are looking for Iteration Eos who is the chap who deals with multi-tool upgrades.
3 – Purchase the Fishing Rig blueprint from Eos
All new devices need a blueprint before you can craft them. Check out Iteration Eos’ wares and buy the Fishing Rig. It only costs one Nanite so you will likely have enough loose change in your space pockets.
Once you have the Blueprint you need to craft the Fishing Rig. Let’s do that next.
4 – Craft the Fishing Rig
You will need some resources to complete the Fishing Rig.
The Fishing Rig is a multi-tool attachment so you need to go to your inventory (TAB on PC) and move along to the Multi-tool section. Find an empty slot and click on it and choose the Fishing Rig to install. That’s not the end of the matter as we need some basic resources to finish the job.
To complete the Rig we need:
3 Carbon Nanotubes
1 Di-Hydrogen Jelly
60 Chromatic Metal
It’s slightly annoying if you don’t have them although the Nanotubes and Chromatic Metal can be crafted usually on the spot. The jelly however needs crystals that if you don’t have them you will have to visit a planet’s surface and harvest some there before crafting it.
Once you have all the parts, click on the Multi-tool again and then on the Fishing Rig, then click on where you need to put the resources and your fishing journey is almost complete. Now we just need to find some of the wet stuff.
5 – Head to a planet to fish
Be sure to reel in your catches in time.
This is the last part really. Although you obviously need to find a planet that actually has water. There is no point in heading to a sun-scorched desert world. We want a nice paradise planet or one with plenty of oceans.
Anyway, find some water.
6 – Fish
There are lots of different fish species to catch now in No Man’s Sky and certain areas will be ripe for certain types. Many common fish can be found in shallow waters, but it is incomprehensible how long it may take and how much of the universe you may have to see before getting them all. It’s best not to think about that, fishing has been added to the game as a chill side-project, not to get all wound up trying to find that last fish you don’t have.
Approach the water and select the Fishing Hub from your Multi-tool. The rod will appear in your hand. It can only be cast when you are at the water so press the mouse button in the direction you want to cast and the line will go out. You will see your float bobbing on the water, and when you get a bite it will bob up and down. Quickly press your mouse button again to reel in your catch. Let’s hope it is a fish and not just some old detritus that’s in the water because that can happen too.
There are different kinds of bait you can also craft to attract different species of fish. Have a play around with them all, find some cool fishing spots on planets, and zone out. Maybe consider building your own fishing base next to your favorite spots.
As with everything in No Man’s Sky, it is yours to do with as you please now.
