Times are hard. Every penny counts but fortunately, we have Banana. The strange Steam phenom that has you clicking on a picture of a banana and every few hours having a new “banana” dropped into your inventory on Steam, as well as enabling you to change the picture of your clickable banana in the ‘game’
So what’s going on here can you actually make any money from Banana and is there anything more sinister at play?
What is Banana?
If you are aware of Egg you will know what’s going on here. Egg has you clicking on a picture of an egg and every now and then you would get an egg. This is the same with a banana. But why? Well, beyond the stupid meme value that Steam players seem to be embracing right now is there something more to it? At the time of writing there are over 400,000 “players” who are playing Banana – except they are not, they probably just have it open idling in the background rather than clicking away.
Again, but why? Meme value aside, and there will be a degree of that, you can actually make a (very) small amount of money from having Banana installed, and that cash is better in your (Steam) wallet right? Let’s have a closer look.
How to make money in Banana
To clear this up the chances of making significant profit are slim at best, but you will be able to make a few pennies here and there pretty much guaranteed. Once you first load Banana and click a few times you should get the first drop of a Banana added to your inventory. This will most likely be worth next to nothing but it will appear in your Steam inventory a few seconds later in a new Banana tab. From here you can choose to list it for sale and see how many others of the same banana are currently up for grabs.
The main trick with Steam Marketplace when selling common items is to make sure the buyer price comes in under the Starter Price. The reason we do this is a lot of items automatically sell if they are “undervalued” so you are guaranteed to get the cash in your wallet. The downside of this is that it probably means you are selling items and only getting 1p/1c for them. As we say, this is no get-rich-quick scheme, but every penny you make is deducted from your next Steam purchase.
Where things can potentially get interesting is if you get a rare drop or even just list a cool looking banana for a stupid price and some idiot comes along with more money than sense for the “lols”. The chance is low, but the chance is there. YouTubers gonna YouTube.
As long as you occasionally click Banana you will get new bananas added to to your inventory to sell every three hours or so. At least until Valve decides enough is enough.
Is Banana a scam?
Banana is certainly not a “scam” in the way we use the word these days but it would be interesting to have an insight into what the devs are making from Valve in terms of cash from players marketplace sales and the sale of absolutely worthless banana cosmetics from the store. Are those cosmetics any worse than a Fortnite or Apex skin though?
Having getting on for half a million PCs all using energy playing this nonsense may speed up the demise of the planet though, and maybe, you could say, we almost deserve it.
