Brazilians can access X again as the social media platform was reinstated in the country, just over a month after it was banned.
On August 30 Elon Musk’s platform was blocked in Brazil following Alexandre de Moraes, the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, ordering the shutdown.
The months-long back-and-forths included disputes over free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation.
X has since complied with the demands including blocking certain accounts from the platform, paying outstanding fines, and naming a legal representative in the country. It was the latter that brought on the suspension.
On Tuesday (October 8) the ‘Global Government Affairs’ account on X announced that the platform is “proud to return to Brazil.
“Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform was paramount throughout this entire process. We will continue to defend freedom of speech, within the boundaries of the law, everywhere we operate.”

X reinstated in Brazil: Why did it get banned?
The social media platform X was blocked in Brazil due to its failure to follow a court order to appoint a legal representative.
It was on August 17 when Elon Musk decided to shut down the network’s Brazil operations after Judge Alexandre de Moraes threatened its legal representatives with fines and arrest if the platform didn’t comply with court orders.
The judge then ordered X to appoint a new legal representative within the country or face the platform being banned entirely.
X failed to initially comply which resulted in the judge ordering an “immediate, complete and total suspension of X’s operations” until all court orders were to be complied with, fines duly paid, and a new legal representative appointed in the country.
